Well, we are off for a spring break trip to Miami on Monday. Seems the temp will be the same here as in Miami. Doh.
When we come home, we are going to start some seeds (esp. tomato) under our grow lights in the basement. I also did some winter sowing, so I am hoping those sprout for us eventually, too . . .
I am also hatching a plan for how to get some of the aged manure from my parents’ house an hour away from here down to my place. I would like to top-dress our new beds with this, but maybe I should just buy compost by the yard. It is more expensive than free, but also we shouldn’t plant in the manure, right?
And then there’s the lawn.
Oh bah. I am getting all confused.

Hey Kelli,
Your parents have a farm? Mine too! When I lived within driving distance of my folks I would always bring back a load of well composted horse manure for the garden (3+ years old generally). If it’s well broken down you should have not problem incorporating it into the soil. Just be sure to check the pH first.
Locally, the Saint Paul compost sites have free compost these days. It’s mostly broken down leaves that people brought in the fall. While you don’t know exactly what’s in it, generally it’s pretty darn good stuff. Better than buying it. The compost sites tend to run out by the end of April. Just be sure to bring a Shovel and some bags or bins!

Such a great blog! I caught your comment at The Simple Dollar (http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2010/07/08/some-thoughts-on-dinks-dual-income-no-kids/comment-page-2/#comment-917397). That led me to your blog, and I grabbed it with Google Reader. Thanks!
My wife and I are worse than black thumbs! We got excited about container gardening, I started a blog series about it, got seedlings started, and then…we moved. In the hassle of moving and a spell of cold weather, and work, and travel…we allowed our seedlings to die! Such bad parents!
Anyway, your blog offers simple encouragement and hope to us.
Thank you!
